What is the Lewiston Loop Project?  The Central Maine Power Company project involves a new substation and underground utilities involving Chapel Street, Middle Street, Main Street, and Canal Street.

  • The Central Maine Power (CMP) “Lewiston Loop” Canal St Project (construction of new sub-station behind the Department of Health & Human Services parking lot between Middle and Chapel; decommissioning of Main St “Steam Plant” sub station;  and laying 1.1 miles of new underground 115kv line from new sub-station, down Chapel across Main Street to Canal extending down to Grimmel's Gas Station).
  • Road work for the project will be done by the Sargent Corporation (electrical will be subcontracted) and public relations will be managed by Burns & McDonnell [B & M has handled all the CMP transmission line upgrades involving the Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP), and as this project is part of the MPRP, they will continue to handle public relations.]
  • Most of the work will be done at night - 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday night through Friday morning.   
  • Some of the first work in the project will involve the removal of old fuel tanks in behind the Steam Plant building.
  • During the construction phase, excavation and open trench work will be covered with heavy steel plates capable of handling all surface vehicle types generally resulting in all lanes remaining open during the day.
  • Emergency services have been advised
  • Nightly road detour signs will be erected as needed.
  • The Lewiston Police Department will be hired to manage traffic as needed.
  • Road project will shut down in December 2016 and finish up in 2017.

SPECIFIC WORK DETAILS

Section 256 Underground 115kV Transmission Line:

Section 256, will be built in a new underground duct bank between the new Middle Street Substation and the Lewiston Lower Substation. The line will follow Main Street, Canal Street, and Lisbon Street before entering the Lewiston Lower Substation near Strawberry Patch Lane. 

Middle Street Substation: Site Preparation and Construction 2016-2017 
 


The new Middle Street Substation will be constructed between the Pan-Am Railroad and the LL Bean Parking Garage. The substation will include 115kV transformers, breakers, switchgear, and control house. 

Overhead Transmission Line Tie-Ins: 2016  

Two existing overhead 34.5kV transmission lines that currently go into the Lewiston Substation (Lewiston Steam Plant in the Pedro’s parking lot) in the vicinity of the Great Falls Dam will be rerouted into the new Middle Street Substation. 

Lewiston Lower Substation Modifications:  2016-2017  

Upgrades of the Lewiston Lower Substation (in back of Grimmel's Gas Station) will occur including the installation of 115kV transformers and associated breakers and switches.

Lewiston Substation (Lewiston Steam) Decommissioning: 2016-2017  

Removal of substation equipment and associated transmission and distribution lines from the Lewiston Substation on Main Street.
