1. What is GIS?

The Geographic Information System, or GIS is a geographically aware array of hardware, software, and data that has captured spatially referenced information pertaining to our city operations. It is used to manage, visualize, analyze, and reveal patterns and relationships on all forms of spatially aware data.

In the City of Lewiston our GIS serves an important role as the infrastructure inventory, modeling, and management system for drinking water, storm, and sewer systems. Other essential data such as, but not limited to, parcels, zoning, and aerial imagery are captured and managed utilizing GIS. Click Here to return to the GIS Portal page.

3. What is an Interactive Map?

Interactive Maps are interfaced with a web browser, these maps are searchable, ie address or tax map/lot and configurable. The end user decides on what map ‘layers’ to display on map, the area to display, and approximate scale. These maps can also be used to ‘identify’ features and layers, to view data pertaining to a parcel, zoning, etc. Click here to return to the GIS Portal page.

4. What is a PDF Map?

A PDF map is a static map you can open up with your browser, print as is, or save to your hard drive.
You will see a collection of maps that have been prepared to satisfy certain themes, such as street maps, city tax maps (as you would see at the county registry of deeds).These maps are not interactive, you can only print as it was prepared. They are not searchable in any way, but are prepared to print to a specific pre-defined scale with layers, legend, north arrow, indexes, or other information for your convenience.

These PDF maps are saved in a common Portable Document Format (Adobe). To read PDFs, you will need to Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is likely you already have this on your computer, but in case you don’t, you can download it for free at http://get.adobe.com/reader/

5. How do I obtain property information?

You can utilize the Interactive Mapping to obtain parcel information, view the lot layout and dimensions, print a simple map, etc. Go to Interactive Maps and utilize the search tools to get to your subject parcel.

6. How can I view or download a tax map?

You have multiple ways to look at tax mapping. If you only want to see your subject parcel and surrounding area, you can utilize the Interactive Maps to look at tax mapping in an live manner, see parcel information, etc. If you simply want to download a static PDF version of a tax map, first you will need to know what map your subject parcel is on. You may use the Interactive Maps to get that information. Then you will want to go to the PDF Maps page, you will see a thumbnail link to the Tax Maps. Click here to return to the GIS Portal page.

7. I need to view zoning for a parcel, where do I go?

You can utilize the Interactive Maps to view zoning districts, overlays, etc. for a particular parcel. Use the search tools to find your parcel by address or parcel ID to get the map centered on your subject parcel. Alternatively if you wish to just view and download the city map itself, go to the PDF Maps page, go to the Zoning Maps link, this will get you to the pdf version of the applicable map. Historical zoning maps from past years (back to 1948) are also available for download there!

8. Can I get a copy of the Tax Card from the GIS?

You will need to contact the Assessors Dept. at (207) 513-3122

9. Can I get a printed hardcopy of a Map?

Yes, you can obtain a printed map of tax maps, zoning maps, or other maps from the MIS Dept.3rd floor of the City Building. Contact Peter Parker, GIS Mapping Specialist, email pparker@lewistonmaine.gov, 207-513-3009, ext 3255.
